Elsie, 100, still hits the high notes

CENTENARIAN Elsie Wakerley has certainly found the right notes to hit for a long and happy life.
The popular music teacher taught hundreds of Southampton people to play the piano from her Swaythling home.

The object of the Gosport Music Festival is to advance the education of the public in the Arts, in particular the Arts of Dance, Music Speech and Drama in all their branches.

The purpose is for amateurs to receive the judgement of professionals and gain from the benefit of seeing others taking part and to develop their confidence before both critical and appreciative audience.

The aim is to raise the standard of amateur performance and further public recognition.

The Festival is managed by volunteers who all have a strong belief in the educational and social value that the competition provides.

The GMF was founded in 1949, by a small group of local volunteers who wished to help and encourage Gosport residents, particularly young people, to gain confidence and aspiration from musical performance. The GMF is still run by a small number of volunteers who share the dedication of their founding fathers.

The Festival is affiliated to the British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech. It is the only community event in Gosport enabling participants to have their recital, dance or speech professionally adjudicated.

Entirely non-sponsored the Festival has grown from strength to strength over the years and now attracts entries from across the South of well over 2000 annually. Dance Schools, Choirs, Barbers Shops are encouraged.

Always a “grass roots” event the Gosport Music Festival has welcomed many entrants with exceptional standard of performance who have gone on to achieve national acclaim and TV fame.
